RAF claims: a practical guide

A plain-language overview of the information commonly needed when considering a Road Accident Fund claim.

Who may potentially claim?

The RAF’s published guidance describes claims involving people injured or killed in road accidents, including certain dependants and representatives of deceased persons. Whether a particular claim is valid depends on the facts and applicable statutory requirements.

Documents commonly relevant

The RAF identifies identity documents, accident reports, witness material, medical records, proof of earnings and, where applicable, a Serious Injury Assessment Report among material used to assess claims.

Time limits matter

Claim deadlines can depend on the circumstances, including whether the driver or owner is identified and whether the claimant is a minor or falls within another protected category. Do not assume there is unlimited time to act.

Important: This is general information, not legal advice. Laws, procedures and deadlines can change, and the facts of an individual matter must be considered.
